Great analysis.

"However, [transformers are] irreducibly stochastic, [are] autoregressive, and [their] output style (freeform text) is not well suited to classification tasks."

This entire sentence isn't true!

1. The stochasticity in the results that we get when we query transformers has two sources: 1. Intentional stochasticity from temperature and 2. Unintentional stochasticity from how multiple queries are batched on a GPU. The first one is completely reducible by setting the temperature to 0; the second one is entirely reducible by not batching queries or serving on a CPU or maybe Thinking Machines has figured out how to solve this. It is not a fundamental, irreducible property of transformers that they are stochastic.

2/3. Transformers are not fundamentally autoregressive, their output is not fundamentally freeform text, and they are not fundamentally poorly suited to classification tasks. Vision transformers are classifiers! They don't output freeform text and they are not autoregressive!
